NDT Cloud Simulation with BeamTool 9 | OnScale Blog

In the near future, reusable rockets will ferry us to space and back, and you’ll be able to honeymoon on the actual moon. To realize that dream, rocket scientists will rely on Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) of carbon fiber, steel, and aluminum components on reusable rockets.

Ultrasonic testing is one of the key Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) analysis techniques utilized every day to evaluate the structural integrity of components and find defects before components fail. This is a highly important process to ensure the safe operation of structures and prevent catastrophes or fatalities. We want reusable rockets, not fireworks.

To ensure the ultrasonic NDT inspections are reliable, modelling and simulation is often used to design, evaluate and optimize inspection set ups. As well as allowing for improved inspection designs, the use of simulation in the NDT process provides a saving in both time and money. Co-simulation – using simulation to augment real-world data – will help ensure the success of NDT studies and the structures they protect.

OnScale and Eclipse Scientific are proud to announce the integration of cloud Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) simulation within BeamTool 9 from Eclipse. This partnership combines the easy to use BeamTool software with OnScale’s efficient Cloud Engineering Simulation Platform to provide accurate simulations, enabling the ability of ultrasonic array scans to be quickly and easily simulated in parallel on the cloud, directly from the BeamTool application. Results can be visualized directly in the BeamTool application.

BeamTool 9 is the latest software release from Eclipse Scientific and provides a powerful and easy to use tool to improve proficiency and accuracy of ultrasonic NDT inspections. BeamTool makes it easy to model, validate and document your Phased Array, TOFD and Conventional Ultrasonic inspection plans with confidence.

OnScale is a Cloud Engineering Simulation Platform - highly efficient multiphysics solvers running on Cloud supercomputers - that solves large problems in a vastly reduced time frame. OnScale offers a number of benefits, including:

  • Accelerated Simulations

Engineers can run massive multi-billion degree-of-freedom simulations in parallel to optimize systems. For BeamTool customers, OnScale enables complete ultrasonic phased-array inspections to be simulated in a reduced time frame.

  • Mode Conversion

When considering inspections with complex geometries, accurate simulation of mode conversion is often crucial to generating realistic results. OnScale considers the fundamental elasto-dynamics of the test piece to demonstrate mode conversion between all wave modes.

  • Defect Scattering

Realistic defect geometries often produce inspection results which are difficult to interpret. By allowing complex defect structures to be meshed in fine detail, OnScale can recreate the scattering matrix and mode conversion effects providing accurate imaging results.

Jeff Dobson is a senior application engineer at OnScale and has recently completed an Engineering Doctorate at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, focused on NDT simulation. Jeff is an experienced FEA engineer with an expertise in advanced NDT simulations, such as modeling ultrasonic inspections of composite components. Jeff has over 7 years experience with OnScale and supports activity across current and future applications, whilst also managing consultancy projects and providing technical support.
