Power of Simulation within BeamTool 9 for NDT Applications

The integration of OnScale within BeamTool 9 gives users the capability to quickly and easily simulate their inspection set up and visualize the complete inspection performance. The plug in capabilities include full FEA solvers, mode conversion, defect scattering and the ability  to run 1,000s of parallel simulations. As well as enabling improved inspection designs, the use of simulation in the Non Destructive Testing (NDT) process allows BeamTool users to save time and money.  New exotic materials and complex components require advancements in NDT, thus simulation is key to design, evaluate and optimize new inspection setups quickly. 


What is BeamTool?

BeamTool from Eclipse Scientific is the world's most popular application for designing ultrasonic inspection plans - it is a fast, easy, open technique development for NDT. It makes it easy for users to simulate, validate and document Phased Array, TOFD and Conventional Ultrasonic Inspection plans with confidence. With BeamTool you can simulate, add custom probes, and finally document it all. OnScale’s simulation software is available in the latest version of BeamTool (9). This integration allows you to configure your problems and submit the parameters to OnScale with ease. Once they're submitted and rendered you can download and view the complete results within BeamTool.


OnScale within BeamTool 9

The integration of OnScale within BeamTool 9 gives users access to NDT simulation from within BeamTool interface, allowing ultrasonic array strands to be accurately simulated in parallel, on the cloud, directly from the BeamTool application. This brings together the advantages of both packages by combining BeamTool’s NDT specific interface that is very user friendly, with the power of OnScale simulation capabilities. There is no complicated simulation set up or requirements to transfer model information between the two software packages. As a full numerical solver, OnScale can accurately and efficiently simulate entire sonic inspection scenarios constructed into the BeamTool environment. 

Simulations consider all mode conversions that occur to fully capture the inspection performance. Any scattering from a simple to complex defect can also be captured to allow realistic results to be generated for an inspection scenario. Having access to cloud computing allows entire beam sets to be simulated in parallel to greatly reduce computation time and provide faster results. 

These simulations utilize OnScale’s efficient multiphysics solvers to accurately simulate complex inspection scenarios and deliver results that are representative of what you might obtain in practice. These simulations will improve inspection planning and validation in a reduced time frame. They also provide a deeper understanding into what is happening in the inspection setup. The ability to run simulations quickly enables users to investigate many different inspection scenarios to gain a more robust understanding of the capability and limitation of an inspection prior to conducting any physical tests. 

Simulation can also help reduce the number of practical tests that are required, as these tests can often be time-consuming and expensive. It is much faster and cost effective to run a series of simulations rather than manufacturing several test components to experimentally test in the real world.

Above images show an example of BeamTool 9 workspace where the root crack has been introduced. You can see that we have a probe, sectoral beam set and the root crack right at the root of the weld.
